Not all DDoS attacks are brute-force floods of data. Some are much more subtle. These are called Layer 7 (Application Layer) attacks. Instead of sending gigabytes of junk data, the attacker sends a small number of very specific requests that are designed to make the server do a lot of work.

For example, an attacker might hit your “Search” function 500 times a second. Because every search requires a database lookup, the server’s CPU spikes to 100%, and the site slows down for everyone else. Traditional firewalls often miss this because the requests look like normal user activity.

Cloudflare’s WAF (Web Application Firewall) uses machine learning to identify these patterns. It knows that a “normal” human doesn’t search for 100 different things in 2 seconds. It will automatically present a challenge (like a Captcha or a browser verification) to those specific requests while letting your real customers through without any delay.
